Helping Children

Reading Tutor

Join us in helping future generations improve their literacy skills by spending time reading with students, using a one-on-one Reading Partners curriculum.  Requires patience and gentle leadership skills.

Frequency: 1-2 x per week during the school year

Locations:  Lumin Lindsley Park Community School and Lumin East Dallas Community School

Mommy and Me Music Class

Use the power and joy of music to help children learn and grow during the years most critical to brain development. This volunteer opportunity allows you to engage with children, aged birth to 3 years old, and their parents in leading a session of sing and play-along while guided through a research-based curriculum, provided by Kindermusik.

Frequency: 1 x per week, 8 week commitment: October 1 – November 26

Location:  Lumin Bachman Lake Community School

Chess Club

Lead students into battle as they build a solid foundation of basic Chess knowledge and skills. Harness the eagerness in your recruits and lead the charge to progress to more sophisticated gameplay.  You can build your own curriculum, or we can provide you with a curriculum developed by Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan with the Saint Louis Chess Club.

Frequency: 1 x per week, 8 week commitment: October 1 – November 26

Location:  Lumin East Dallas Community School

Athletic Club

Fitness is fun and vital for young and developing bodies. There is no better way to get kids engaged and excited about fitness than by teaching the basics of a sport of your choice! Soccer, T-Ball, Volleyball, and Kickball are just some of the activities our kids, ages 5-9, would love to learn.

Frequency: 1 x per week, 8 week commitment: October 1 – November 26

Campus Projects

Team Beautification Project: Curb Appeal

Our campuses are the face of our community. If you are interested in beautification or have a knack for landscaping and other handiwork, then this is the opportunity for you!  Add “curb appeal” by landscaping a defined street-facing area and help Lumin Education make a good first impression. Experience helpful, but not required.

Location:  Lumin East Dallas Community School

Team Beautification Project: Garden Irrigation System

If you have a knack for designing, planning and putting things together then this is the opportunity for you! Install a drip irrigation system in the raised garden beds at our Lumin Lindsley Park campus.  Educators use these gardens as learning resources for students. With the help of your team, the installation of an eco-friendly water supply ensures these resources are available to our students throughout the school year. Experience helpful, but not required.

Team Beautification Project: Refinish Classroom Tables and Chairs

Our classrooms are the heart of Lumin Education, and the tiny chairs and tiny tables the children use every day get a lot of wear.  Sometimes these chairs and tables need a little T.L.C.  Using your team’s knowledge of restoring the brilliance of natural wood, help us bring these chairs and tables back to life so that generations of students and teachers can continue to use them.  If you are interested in improving the daily experience of our students, then this is the opportunity for you!  Experience helpful, but not required.

Team Beautification Project: Pocket Park

If you have a knack for landscaping or other handiwork then this is the opportunity for you!  Create a “Pocket Park” in the small neglected corner of our Lumin Lindsley Park campus. On the perimeter of a beautiful green space, this little “Pocket” is in need of T.L.C. and repurposing.  We would love to provide our students and teachers with a space to utilize for outdoor lessons, or simply a nice area to sit and reflect. This opportunity allows your team to create and install a small landscape project.  Experience helpful, but not required.

Offsite Projects

Crafting Activities

The earliest years of childhood are the most important for physical, emotional and intellectual development.  To help teach parents to be “their child’s first, best teacher,” Lumin Education uses the Parents as Teachers (PAT) home visiting program for children up to age five.  The curriculum incorporates the use of specialized learning equipment made primarily from low-cost or recycled materials.  Using supplies and instructions we provide, you or your group can make these items, and Lumin’s in-home instructors will use them with the families we serve.

With materials and instructions provided by Lumin, create items such as:

  • Baby mobiles
  • Color matching games
  • Shape matching games
  • Tummy-time textured blankets (sewing required)
